Description:
Copper fulus of the Mamluk Sultanate circulated widely across the Levant and Egypt during the 14th century. Sultan al-Nasir Hasan ruled Egypt and Syria during a turbulent period of internal political struggle within the Mamluk elite. Coins struck at the important mint of Damascus often display distinctive geometric arrangements of Arabic inscriptions, including triangular or polygonal designs such as seen on this piece.
