When Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake), an overweight teen, auditions for a spot on a popular teen dance show, she beats out the spiteful Amber von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick), winning over Amber's boyfriend (Michael St. Gerard) in the process. After meeting some black students at her school, Tracy begins to push for more racial integration on the dance show. This gets her into trouble on many sides, especially with Amber's pushy parents (Sonny Bono, Deborah Harry). A teenage boy, obsessed with photographing everything he sees around him, is seized upon by an aggressive gallery owner from New York who views the youngster as fresh young talent worth entertaining, but as his success and fame grows, the boy finds himself less welcome in his home town and decides to turn the tables on the elitist art snobs of the city. John Waters is known as the "Prince of Puke," a moniker he embraces in both his life and his art. As he muses on his early childhood in Baltimore, Waters identifies his earliest influences, including tacky drive-in movies and local burlesque performers. He recalls his rocky introduction to film, how his longtime friend Divine, a genderbending drag performer known for his outlandish stunts, inspired some of his most famous work and what he really thinks about "this filthy world." Baltimore's cult filmmaker and queer cinema pioneer John Waters, director of "Hairspray" and "Pink Flamingos," is profiled here with an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Pink Flamingos," as a companion to interviews with Waters' family, friends and colleagues, as well as early footage of the director at work. The true highlights are Waters' parents as they contemplate their peculiar child and his body of work, and the segments devoted to profiling Waters' star, Divine. A frustrated housewife, Francine Fishpaw (Divine), tries to maintain her sanity while taking care of her dysfunctional household. Elmer (David Samson), her husband and the owner of an adult theater, is sleeping with his secretary, and her delinquent teen son, Dexter (Ken King), and pregnant teen daughter, Lulu (Mary Garlington), aren't helping matters any. But when Francine meets dashing Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), the owner of a theater specializing in art films, her life appears rosier. A housewife (Mink Stole) murders her husband, runs away and ends up in a town ruled by an evil queen who wants to infect her kingdom with rabies. A bizarre fat woman (Divine) and her misfit family compete with a Baltimore couple (David Lochary, Mink Stole) to be named the filthiest people alive. A prim and proper schoolgirl goes against her mother's wishes when she dates a motorcycle-riding juvenile delinquent. Happy housewife Beverly Sutphin has a charmed life - a beautiful suburban home, a successful dentist husband, and two normal teenagers. However, when one of her son's teachers speaks disparagingly of the boy at a parent-teacher conference, Bev runs the instructor over in the school parking lot. Suddenly she has an insatiable taste for murder. Six homicides later, the cops get wise to her crimes. The Cavalcade of Perversion, a travelling freak-show, is a front for a band of psychotic kidnappers and murderers. An obese woman (Divine) gives birth to an obnoxious child and embarks upon a bizarre and violent life of crime. An insane action-comedy about a young lunatic director and his devoted cult of cinema terrorists who kidnap a movie goddess and force her to star in their underground movie. Vowing to punish the crass sins of commercial cinema, fueled by revolutionary zeal and their self-imposed sexual frustration, Cecil B. DeMented and his guerrilla production crew invade the streets of Baltimore to shoot their no-budget epic. When Cecil says Action, he means action! Nothing is going to stand in his way. Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman) runs a convenience store with her husband (Chris Isaak) and mother-in-law (Suzanne Shepherd). One day, Sylvia is hit on the head and transforms from an uptight prude to a sex-crazed lunatic. As she goes on a rampage through town, Sylvia attracts the attention of Ray Ray (Johnny Knoxville), a sexual healer and tow truck driver in search of the world's greatest orgasm. Their sexual revolution, however, causes a class war in their tiny Baltimore community. Mondo Trasho A day in the life of a hit and run driver and her victim, and the bizarre things that happen to them. |
