Iris germanica 'Beverly Sills' is an award-winning tall bearded iris celebrated for its ruffled, coral-pink flowers and vigorous growth. It is a fast-growing, heavy-blooming perennial that typically reaches a height of 60–90 cm and usually flowers between May and June.
Flowers: Produces large, extravagantly ruffled blooms in a rich coral-pink to coral-rose hue with tangerine-orange beards. Some flowers may also have a light perfume.
Foliage: Features stiffly erect, green, sword-shaped leaves that remain attractive after the blooming season.
Performance: Highly regarded for its reliability and robustness, even in damp summers where other pink irises may struggle.
Awards: It has won the American Dykes Medal, the highest honour awarded by the American Iris Society.
Toxicity: All parts of the plant may cause discomfort if ingested and are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
Cultivation and Care
Sunlight: Requires full sun to ensure strong flowering and disease resistance.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline.
Planting: Rhizomes should be planted just above the soil level or partially exposed to "bake" in the sun, which is essential for bloom production.
Maintenance: Cut back faded flower stems after blooming and remove withered leaves in late winter. It is recommended to lift and divide rhizomes every 3–4 years to prevent overcrowding.
