SEE PHOTO(s) - COMPLETE ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER, the Northampton Mercury (ENGLAND) dated Mar 29, 1784. This original newspaper contains an inside page report from VIRGINIA indicating an act establishing who could and could not be a citizen of VIRGINIA in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War.

Following the Revolutionary War, Virginia and other states enacted strict measures against Loyalists, culminating in actions around 1783–1784 that effectively revoked their rights, confiscated property, and forced many into exile. These "disaffected" persons lost their citizenship through state-level laws, leading to a massive exodus of thousands to Canada and Britain.

1783–1784 Context: While the Treaty of Paris (1783) recommended leniency, Virginia and other states ignored this, instead enacting confiscation acts that stripped Loyalists of civil liberties, including the ability to vote, sue in court, or own property.

Loss of Citizenship: Loyalists were deemed traitors, and their property was seized. Those who left were considered to have abandoned their citizenship, while those who stayed often faced intense discrimination.

Exodus and Exile: Approximately 85,000 Loyalists left the new nation, with many Southern Loyalists, including about 900 from Virginia, fleeing with the British in 1783–1784 to places like Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, or Britain.

Legacy: Many who left were known as "United Empire Loyalists" (UE), and those who lost property were able to petition the British Crown for compensation starting around 1784–1785.
