La date symbolique de fondation de l’UVA, fixée par ordre de son commandement, est le 20 avril 2014 - correspondant au premier combat offensif des volontaires ukrainiens sous le commandement de Dmytro Yarosh lors de l’Opération antiterroriste près de Sloviansk, dans l’oblast de Donetsk.
