VICTORIAN GOLD MOIRE SILK TAFFETA WEDDING GOWN ENSEMBLE, CIRCA 1873
Victorian Moire Silk Taffeta Bustle Wedding gown Ensemble circa 1873, comprising of golden yellow silk moire three piece in construction dress, comprising bodice and skirt, and with a decorative apron with two long streamers in same material. A light pale yellow satin trim edging around neckline, on waist, on decorative scalloping petals and on cuffs. The bodice and skirt lined in cotton and bodice has 9 covered satin button front closure.
Extra paperwork includes a museum catalog with Donor’s name, fabrication, color, measurements, and history. Dress came from California and museum unknown.
Also a later additional wedding cap with tole net veil, made from from the same material.

PROVENANCE
Made for a wedding that took place in 1873, thence worn by great-great granddaughter of original recipient, for her wedding in "Wee Church in the Heather," Glendale, CA, and her daugher-in-law, Barbara Lynn Palatina to Stephen Edward Hicks, August 21, 1962, with photographs of the last two named in the ensemble included with the lot. The original wreath-like headdress then changed to incorporate parts of the bodice hem into a cap, and sewed with tole net for the veil.
CONDITION
Overall, the condition is good to excellent. The fabric has no stains, no repairs and with light discoloration fading at underarms. The fabric itself is supple, strong and lively. The bodice inner placket top has a split edge; minor splits to fabric at skirt waist band, due to stress. Lace collar possibly a later replacement.
None of these minor issues detracts from the elegance of this gown, which is in good state of preservation for its age.

Provenance: Clothing from the estate of William Insco Buchanan (September 10, 1853 – October 17, 1909) who was an American diplomat. On January 26, 1894, President Grover Cleveland (the former mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York appointed Buchanan United States Minister to Argentina. Buchanan was chosen by John G. Milburn, president of the exposition, as the exposition was planned with a Latin American theme and they wanted someone who knew the South American countries well Buchanan was Director General of the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York from May 1 through November 2, 1901, and is credited with the construction, operation, and dismantling of the exposition. His ancestors still resides in the same home in Buffalo, New York and all clothing were stored in the attic of this ancestral home.
