Overview
This is a genuine Ottoman-period lead customs seal bearing Arabic inscriptions reading جمرك (Jomrok / Gümrük, meaning “Customs”) and الأزرق (Al-Azraq). The seal would have been attached to goods passing through an official customs station, certifying inspection and taxation by Ottoman authorities.
Azraq was an important desert outpost and trade checkpoint in the Ottoman Levant, situated along caravan routes linking Syria, Arabia, and Iraq. Customs seals such as this were crimped onto trade goods, textiles, and transport bundles to indicate official clearance.
Such seals provide tangible evidence of Ottoman administrative control and trade regulation across the Near East.
