The model of this helmet is based on Date Masamune (1567–1636), one of the most famous samurai warlords in Japanese history, known nationwide as the “One-Eyed Dragon.”

He was the 17th head of the Date clan, who unified southern Ōshū and laid the foundation of the Sendai Domain (approx. 620,000 koku).

Date Masamune was not only a brilliant military and political leader who skillfully survived the eras of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, but also a visionary ruler. His achievements include the construction of Sendai Castle and its castle town, development of Ishinomaki Port, and the historic dispatch of the Keichō Embassy to Europe, contributing greatly to Japan’s civil engineering, trade, and cultural exchange.

About Gogatsu Ningyo (May Dolls)

In Japan, this type of helmet is called a Gogatsu Ningyo (May Doll). In ancient times, many children lost their lives to illness and epidemics. For this reason, people began displaying samurai helmets and armor in May as a protective charm, praying for children’s health, safety, and strong growth, and to ward off misfortune.

Even today, these helmets symbolize strength, protection, and good fortune, and are cherished as traditional Japanese cultural decorations.
