Command Magazine #22

Antietam

  Burnished Rows of Steel

Antietam: Burnished Rows of Steel is a Tactical level board-wargame of the bloodiest single-day battle in the American Civil War.

Rob ert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had invaded Maryland and taken harper's Ferry, but a cop of one of his written orders found by Union forces had exposed his plans. On 17 September, 1962, near the small Maryland town of Sharpsburg, George B. McClellan's Army of the  Potomac brought the Rebels to bay, with the Potomac River at their back and the Antietam Creek to their front.

For Lee and his army, it was a desperate chance to win a victory on Northern soil and gain foreign recognition for their cause. For McClellan it was a chance both to save his career and destroy the most dangerous Rebel army to "nobly save or meanly lose the last, best hope of Earth."

In the end, neither man attained his objective, despite the most frightful day of killing in American History

Game turns are sequential, with each player moving, firing artillery, and then having two rounds of combat, each in turn. Also provided are rules for solitaire play.

Victory is determined by victory points earned by the Union player for capturing and maintaining control of geographical objectives and Confederate unit losses. If the Confederate player can hold the Union to less than 25 points, they win. Victory conditions are slightly different for the Solitaire game..

Command Magazine was sold on news-stands as a History, Strategy & Analysis Magazine. It was also sold combined as a Magazine/Game combination.

This is a superior shape copy that may have a bit staple rust. This is old inventory from my store and has the manufacturer’s price sticker for the “hobby” edition (Issue with game) affixed to the front. It is crispy clean inside, shiny, unmarked and guaranteed complete. The game is unpunched and un-played.
