Original WWII National Fire Service Forestry Map – Hale, Barbadoes, Buckle, Ravensnest & Glyn Woods (Tintern, Wye Valley) – Area 20-B

This is an original forestry fire-fighting map produced by the National Fire Service (NFS) during the Second World War. Issued as part of Forestry Fire Area 20-B, this sectional sheet covers the Tintern Abbey and Wye Valley district in Monmouthshire, showing Hale Wood, Barbadoes Wood, Buckle Wood, Ravensnest Wood, and Glyn Wood. The River Wye runs through the sheet, with surrounding villages and landmarks such as Tintern Parva, Chapel Hill, and the ruins of Tintern Abbey all clearly marked.

The map highlights vital resources and infrastructure essential for fire-fighting during the war, including:

These maps were specially printed for internal NFS and civil defence use only. They were designed to coordinate emergency responses to fires in wooded areas, particularly those caused by incendiary bombing raids. Each sheet  was meant to be used directly in the field under pressure. Very few survive today, as most were discarded after the war.

Reference: Forestry Fire Area 20 – Division B.
Date: c. 1940s WWII.
Size: approx. 20 × 15 inches.
Format: Original map sheet.

Condition: Original WWII item. Light age toning and edge handling, small binding holes at the side, hinge reinforced on reverse. Map colours remain bright and fully legible.

👉 For clarity, a photocopy of the Index/Key page from the original volume will be included with this map, allowing the buyer to easily interpret the NFS symbols (control points, incident posts, water supply symbols, etc.).

These sheets are rare survivals of Britain’s Home Front civil defence planning, and this example is particularly desirable as it covers the famous Tintern Abbey and Wye Valley, blending local heritage with wartime history.
