VISIONAIRE 28: THE BIBLE - LIMITED EDITION #3184/6000A STUNNING AVANT-GARDE ART PIECE - BOOK ONLY
This is a rare opportunity to own the core volume of Visionaire 28, "The Bible." This was the celebrated millennium issue, a bold project where “the greatest story ever told” is retold in images by modern-day artists and photographers. This specific copy is hand-numbered 3184 out of a strictly limited edition of 6000 copies worldwide.
The intent of this issue was to make a volume that was visually provocative but not blasphemous or gratuitously shocking. To ensure the integrity of the work, Visionaire worked closely with Dr. Royal Rhodes, a professor of religion at Kenyon College, who helped excerpt specific passages from the King James Bible to accompany the imagery.
The content inside is a visual tour-de-force from the titans of photography and art. Wolfgang Tillmans contributed the "Crucifixion"; Andreas Gursky’s iconic image of a massive rave is recontextualized as "The Exodus"; Mary Ellen Mark envisions a modern-day Mary and Joseph; and Steven Meisel imagines the "Apocalypse" in a series of eerily foreboding fashion images inspired by the painter Odd Nerdrum.
This copy still includes the original "dotted" subscription flyer insert. As any seasoned Visionaire collector knows, these ephemeral pieces of history are almost always lost or discarded. Finding a copy that still contains this original piece tucked inside speaks to the careful provenance of this volume, but since I obtained it second hand, IT IS MISSING the Philippe Starck special packaging for the issue, a molded-plastic “energy sphere."
Condition is Fine. The book itself has been remarkably well-preserved, in fact it looks new and unread in every respect. The heavy page stock features shimmering gilt edges that remain lustrous and bright with only one edge showing a miniscule (AND I DO MEAN, MINUTE) bit of shelfwear.The binding is firm and square, and the interior is free of any marks, odors, or highlights.If you have been looking for the world-class art of this elusive issue without the $800 price tag of the fully encased version, this is your chance! Despite USPS claims of 3-9 day delivery times, MEDIA MAIL CAN actually TAKE UP TO 3 WEEKS to arrive, and their tracking info is frequently not updated until it actually arrives, making that feature pretty useless! PLEASE remember this when you leave feedback scores as the choice is yours and not my fault if it takes a long time to get there! If you want it in a week or less, you are going to have to bite the bullet and pay for Priority Mail which will get it there in 2-3 working days, 99% of the time, but it is more expensive. Basically, the choice is yours, but if you choose media mail, please don't write to me in 5 days asking where your package is, because the post office will have it and most of the time, they don't have a clue!
