CW shortwave broadcasting stations are precisely synchronized with each other in 18 fixed locations around the world. Each of them broadcasts a 10-second string of characters every three minutes. First, it broadcasts its call sign, then four one-second signals with a power of 100 W, 10 W, 1 W and 100 mW respectively. In addition, after each broadcast, the station switches to a higher frequency (higher band). These stations operate on five fixed frequencies: 14.100 MHz, 18.110 MHz, 21.150 MHz, 24.930 MHz, 28.200 MHz. Then this cycle repeats itself.
In order to effectively find out which station is heard at a given moment while listening to the radio band, a tool in the form of the KT-003A device from KRAIT Technologies comes with help. The system has a built-in GPS module, which after proper synchronization (which is indicated by the SYNC LED) indicates which station (beacon) is actually transmitting its signal at the moment. This is signaled by one of eighteen red LEDs placed on an elegant panel with a world map. In addition, it contains a list of stations along with the location for easier identification of the received station.
The CTRL button allows you to switch between five frequencies. The currently selected frequency is indicated by a green LED.
The system has the functionality of the RTC (Real Time Clock) module. In the event of loss of GPS coverage, the system switches to internal timing. This allows you to continue using the KT-003A system where there is no current access to GPS satellites or it is difficult.
The board is equipped with two mounting holes that allow you to attach a 3xAAA battery basket (not included) for completely autonomous operation of the system.
The system has a power switch that allows you to easily turn off the system without disconnecting the power cable or removing the battery.
The system can be supplied with voltage in the range of 8,5...16 VDC. The current draw is 70 mA at 9 VDC.
The described chip is a refreshed version of the "MJF-890, Atomic DX Beacon Monitor" from MFJ at a much lower price. The use of a GPS receiver (instead of DCF and similar) allows for much easier synchronization - in practice, the system is ready for operation in less than a minute.
