The mass air flow sensor is located between the air filter and the throttle body and measures the amount of air entering the engine. It is part of the vehicle's electronic fuel injection system. Sensor failure can result in inaccurate air volume. You'll notice if the exhaust pipe is belching black smoke, or if the engine is running erratically or backfiring.
When the MAF sensor is faulty, it cannot measure the air flow correctly. This causes the engine computer to miscalculate the amount of fuel injected. As a result, sensor failures can cause a variety of drivability problems, including failure to start, stalling, underpower and poor acceleration. In addition, sensor failure may cause the "Check engine" or "Repair engine" indicator to light up.
