Antique Engraving Tom and His Pidgeons After a Painting by John Russell

Print made by stipple engraver Charles Knight (British, 1743-1826)

Date of creation: 1792

Up for sale is a stunningly beautiful (and imperfect) color engraving depicting the artist's son Tom in a dress with a cat and pigeons in a nest.

Tom was the youngest son of John and Hannah Russell and was often painted by his father.

As was common at the time, boys wore dresses until the age of six or seven, when they were then formally put into breeches or "breeched."

This print is in The British Museum's collection.
