It represents a dramatic evolution from the older RIM-7 SeaSparrow, transforming it into a highly agile and lethal weapon against modern, high-speed, low-altitude anti-ship threats.
1. Primary Mission & Threat Focus:
Core Mission: To provide an effective, last-line-of-defense shield for ships against the most challenging maneuvering anti-ship missiles, aircraft, and small surface threats. It is the primary layer of defense inside the engagement envelope of longer-range systems like the SM-2 and SM-6.
Key Threats: It is specifically optimized to defeat supersonic, sea-skimming cruise missiles that fly very low and fast, often employing radical terminal maneuvers to evade defenses.
2. Key Design Features & Technological Advantages:
Airframe & Propulsion: Unlike the older, smaller-diameter RIM-7, the ESSM uses a large-diameter rocket motor and tail control system. This provides:
High Speed & Long Range: Significantly greater kinematic performance, allowing it to engage threats much farther out than its predecessor.
Extreme Maneuverability: Exceptional "end-game" agility to track and intercept even the most violently maneuvering targets.
Guidance System: It is a semi-active radar homing (SARH) missile. The launching ship illuminates the target with its fire-control radar, and the missile homes in on the reflected energy. This allows for precision guidance without the cost and complexity of an active seeker on every missile.

RIM-162A/B: The initial standard variants, quad-packed in VLS.
RIM-162C/D (ESSM Block 2): The newest generation. Its most significant upgrade is the integration of an active radar seeker. This provides a "engage-on-remote" capability, where the missile can receive mid-course updates from the ship or other platforms (like an airborne radar) and then use its own seeker for the terminal kill. This greatly increases engagement flexibility and effectiveness in complex electronic warfare environments.

The ESSM is fielded on a vast array of platforms, including:
