Antique 18th C. Mughal India Bronze Figure of Nandi, The Holy Bull of Shiva


  • For your consideration is an early votive bronze sculpture of Nandi, the sacred bull of the Hindu god Shiva. Nandi is Shiva’s animal form also identified as the god’s vehicle since the Kushan dynasty (c. 1st century CE)
  • Cast with the lost wax technique,  the animal rests recumbent on a raised rectangular platform. Delicately incised decorative details delineate his graceful body.
  • The surface has been smoothed over the centuries by devoted handling and cleaning, creating a tangible feeling of antiquity and value
  • Great even patina
  • Circa 18th century, Mughal dynasty, Southern India

  • Measurements: Approx. 4.5" tall x 3" x 1.75" at the base
  • Weighs about 14 oz.
