For the Baseball Hobbyist. . . 1887-1890 Old Judge tobacco card (N172) #1 - WILLIAM "BILLY" SUNDAY ~ Chicago White Stockings & world famous Christian evangelist
"N172" (actually, simply "172") - the "N" (for 19th century) being added in later years - is the designation Jefferson Burdick in his American Card Catalog decades ago gave Goodwin & Company's Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cards of 1887-1890. Original cards from this set are now more than 125 years old and an individual card of the most common player will cost hundreds of dollars in top condition. This card is reproduced in close-to-the- original 1-7/16" by 2-1/2" size (being 1-5/8" by 2-1/2") and features a black and white posed photograph on thin cardboard stock. The back has a snappy little biography (frequently with reference to the Old Judge issue) below the player's name and card number and closes with mention of that fact that the card is a REPRINT. Here is an opportunity to acquire a reprint of a very scarce card at a affordable price. Condition: Near-Mint Collecting Tip: for those seeking detailed information regarding Old Judge cards - and especially N172's, we recommend (and sell) The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Co. ~ 1886-1890, the encyclopedic 459-page hardbound book. ANY number of single cards (up to and including 8" X 10" in size) will ship for the one single card USPS Ground Advantage cost IF the buyer will request and wait for a combined invoice before paying. Also available is eBay standard envelope service for qualifying orders. Questions? Email us. Periodically we experience problems with our scanner. Today is one of those days. Depending upon which view you choose, the first scan will show horizontal lines, wavy and/or cross hatching marks. Rest assured, these are not on the card itself. THE LAST SCAN: Our last scan is a picture of all-time baseball great Ted Williams with The Baseball Hobbyist's Steve Mitchell at a 1983 Connecticut sports collectors gathering - Ted's very first-ever collector event. On the second day of the show "The Splendid Splinter" visited with collectors and dealers and graciously posed for this photo. (Photo courtesy of fellow collector-dealer Bob Thing, longtime Maine hobbyist). _______________________ Important: Shipping Information A goal has always been to keep shipping costs low. Our primary objective is to sell cards and other things of interest to baseball hobbyists - not make money by overcharging on shipping. If you ever believe you are being overcharged on shipping, please email us and we will double-check the facts of the matter. Thank you!
