First Division 2nd Brigade Sutler Scrip

First Division 2nd Brigade sutler scrip for the 3rd Maine Infantry, valued at 0¢. Features a central portrait of a Union officer, flanked by large red “5” denomination diamonds at each corner. The text reads: “First Division 2nd Brg. / Sutler to the 3rd Maine / Good for 5 Cents when presented at Paymaster’s Table of this Brigade in sums of Two Dollars.” Signed at lower right by sutler F. McCabe, with a vignette of marching soldiers below the text and an ornamental background design.

Sutler scrip was privately issued by merchants who followed Civil War regiments and sold provisions directly to soldiers. Often issued in small denominations, these notes were only redeemable at the issuing sutler’s tent, functioning as a closed-loop credit system. Notes associated with specific regiments and divisions are highly sought after by collectors of Civil War history, numismatics, and military ephemera.
