Powers on, but shows a T2 / TPM firmware error when attempting to reinstall macOS.
Wi-Fi does not function properly — the Mac shows the spinning globe for Internet Recovery but fails to connect, even when a network is selected.
School or organization logo/engraving is present on the top panel — this cannot be removed.
MDM Lock (Mobile Device Management) is active, meaning it’s still registered to a managed institution.
iCloud lock is OFF, so there’s no Apple ID tied to it.
Cosmetic condition: good overall with light wear; see all photos for details.
This model contains Apple’s T2 security chip, which manages encryption, Secure Boot, and Touch ID.
If the firmware becomes corrupted (often after a reset or OS reinstall), you’ll see:
A spinning Wi-Fi globe that fails to connect or proceed.
“A critical update is required” or similar firmware error messages.
To fix it, you need to revive the T2 firmware using Apple Configurator 2 on another Mac:
Download Apple Configurator 2 from the Mac App Store on a separate, working Mac.
Connect this A2179 to that Mac using a USB-C to USB-C cable.
Put the A2179 into DFU Mode (special firmware recovery mode).
In Configurator, select the device and click “Revive” or “Restore.”
This process reinstalls the bridgeOS (T2 firmware) and can bring the system back to full boot capability.
If you’re not familiar, I can help guide you through the steps after purchase.
The Mac is still tied to an MDM (Mobile Device Management) server from a school or company.
This means after you revive or reinstall macOS, it will prompt for institution credentials.
I can assist with a temporary MDM bypass to get into the OS if needed.
No iCloud or Apple ID lock, so ownership is clean.
Engraved school logo or ID is permanently marked on the top casing and cannot be removed.
It doesn’t affect function but should be expected.
