Hoggle and three other men attacked Reverend James Reeb and two other ministers in Selma, Alabama, seeking retribution for the ministers' involvement in civil rights activism. Although the attack left one minister dead and the other two seriously hurt, Hoggle and the other attackers were acquitted by an all-white court, leading to widespread protests and ultimately becoming one of the inciting incidents of the civil rights movement in the American South.
From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.
