This exquisite Edo period kozuka is attributed to Jōkasai, a renowned makie artist from the Yamada family lineage, known for their sophisticated lacquer works during the late Edo period. Although unsigned, this piece carries an authenticated attribution.
The design, Fugaku Sōkaku-zu, depicts Mt. Fuji with a pair of cranes, executed with meticulous takamakie (raised makie) and urushi lacquer techniques, showcasing Jōkasai’s refined artistry.
About Jōkasai : Jōkasai was a prominent Edo period makie master, part of the Yamada family of lacquer craftsmen. He specialized in small decorative fittings such as kozuka, inro, and small boxes, often using takamakie, takane makie, and gold/silver inlay techniques. His works are celebrated for their elegant composition, exquisite detailing, and rich textures, making them highly sought after by collectors. Many surviving pieces bear his signature or authenticated attribution, and his legacy continues to be admired in museums and private collections today.
