This is an antique Japanese Tsuba (sword guard) from the Edo period.

The iron plate is skillfully carved in relief with a dynamic design of a dragon emerging from swirling clouds above, gazing down over crashing ocean waves below. The eyes of the dragon and scattered points of gold inlay highlight the composition, adding brilliance to the otherwise dark iron surface.

In Japanese culture, the dragon (ryū) is a powerful and auspicious creature, often associated with water, strength, and protection. Combined with the motif of turbulent waves, this Tsuba embodies both natural energy and mythical symbolism, reflecting the refined artistry of Edo-period sword fittings.
