Annual Picnic of the Black Boy Birthday Society Menu, 1895
Bifold menu for the annual picnic of the Black Boy Birthday Society held at the New Bath Hotel in Matlock. The Birthday Society, comprised of businessmen from Nottinghamshire and its surrounding areas, existed for over a century, beginning in 1835. This organization held weekly meetings along with annual picnics and dinners. The society also made charitable contributions, including support for a World War I soldiers' cigarette fund. Most likely named after King Charles II, who was nicknamed The Black Boy due to his dark hair. The menu is printed on blue and pink paper with many different fonts as is common for the era. The cover decorations include a racist minstrel style drawing of a black boy. 4.25 x 6.25. Chipping, foxing, glue damage to the rear panel. Good only.
