This listing is for four red / reddish-brown rocks, each of which are roughly 6" on their longest axis. You'll see cracks, crevices, holes (a few of which are quite deep), and depressions across their surfaces, along with pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", they were hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona.
Those pockmarks are one of the most recognizable features of scoria. When these rocks were expelled from the volcanoes that were active here between 300,000-1.5 million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten rock. As they cooled, the gas was trapped, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rocks themselves. The red color resulted when the rocks' iron content oxidized as they contacted hot steam during the eruption
They would be ideal for the following uses:
• In aquariums. Set them out a bit from a corner to create a safe space for smaller fish, or combine them with other rocks to create an underground scene. Scoria lava rocks are extremely lightweight and reduce the risk of damaging your tanks. They offer additional benefits ensuring the health of your aquarium, too. IMPORTANT: These rocks are shipped in a natural state and need to be prepared before introducing them into your aquarium.
• Lava rocks can create a beautiful setting in your terrarium or bonsai tree arrangements. Juxtapose these rocks to larger plants to create a visual offset, for example. (Please see our other listings if you’re looking for something in a different size or shape. Each listing is unique.)
• Lava rocks are an ideal base for planting small succulents. Its pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for roots to grab hold and take root, too.
We know how to rock here at Arizona Lava Rocks! Ours don't start out in a pile in some yard! Each rock is individually gathered. It was picked off the ground because something about it caught our eye. Again, this listing is for the specific rocks you see in the accompanying photos. Our inventory is constantly changing - please check out our other listings.
