Historical Background:
The Iron Cross 1870 was founded by King Wilhelm I of Prussia (1797–1888) as war with France loomed in 1870. The Grand Cross was awarded to commanding generals for major victories, such as the capture of enemy fortresses. Its design continues the tradition of the Iron Cross first created in 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III.
