This is a kozuka featuring a powerful depiction of a tiger prowling through bamboo under drifting clouds, masterfully rendered in katakiribori (single-edged engraving). The tiger's piercing gold-inlaid eyes heighten the sense of movement and tension. A classic motif symbolizing strength, courage, and an unyielding spirit.

The artist of this piece, Tosen, is known by the art name Ogata Naochika. Active in the late Edo period, Naochika lived in Takada, Echigo Province (present-day Niigata Prefecture). He studied under Oguri Yoshinao, a renowned craftsman and prominent student of Hamano Naoyuki. This kozuka strongly reflects the Hamano school's stylistic traits, particularly in the finely detailed rendering of the tiger’s fur. It is considered one of Naochika’s masterworks.
