Really cool, somewhat scary BORNEO / W KALIMANTAN
FROM FEAR TO FAITH
FEAR
"Fear is the hallmark of Dyck life. Living in elevated communal longhouses, the Dyaks are animists, beliving in non-human ancestors and practicing totemism. Superstitions and taboos are woven into the total fabric of everyday life. No rice-planting could prosper apart from appeasement of the rice god. Ubiquitous evil spirits bent on imposing physical harm are bought off with frequent blood sacrifuces of pigs, chickens, or dogs. Spirits of the deceased must be lured away and sent adrift by boat on local streams to prevent their returning to haunt the living."
Etc etc.
