Note: With an independent suspension, the amount of lift can be significantly greater than the thickness of the lift spacer.
Calculating the amount of lift to expect for an independent suspension application can be a little less straightforward. Independent suspension designs typically consist of at least one control arm, the inside of which is secured to the frame while the outside is attached to the wheel. It is supported by a spring or strut mounted someplace between the wheel and the frame. Suspension travel is accomplished by the control arm pivoting at the point where it is mounted to the frame. Since the wheel is mounted farther from the control arm pivot than the strut is, it experiences a longer travel than the strut does. For example, installing a 1.5” thick strut spacer on independently suspended vehicles can act as 3” lift kits.
What are Lift Kit?
Lift kits are aftermarket enhancements that you can install to lift your vehicle further off the ground.
With a suspension lift kit, you’ll lift up the entire vehicle, from the wheels/axles on up. Suspension lift kits for trucks are installed in a variety of ways, depending upon the vehicle and the kit, with the installation process more complex than with a body kit.
At its simplest, the kits lift up the vehicle. After installing a kit, you can add monster tires, which allow you to navigate off-road and on rough roads with much more finesse.
Front Installation
1.To begin install, block the rear tires of the vehicle so that the vehicle is stable and can’t roll backwards. Safely lift the front of the vehicle and support the frame with jack stands. Place jack stands on both sides of the vehicle and remove both front tires.
2.Unbolt the nut for the swaybar end-link. Take out the sway bar end-link.
3.Unbolt the brackets for the abs line using.
4.Remove the shock absorber from the truck.
5.Support the lower cotrol arm with a floor jack.
6.Unbolt the nut holding the tie rod to the knuckle.
7.Loosen the nut holding the upper ball joint to the knuckle.
8.Strike the side of the knuckle where the upper ball joint and tie ord are with a hammer. The upper ball joint and tie rod will separate from the knuckle.
9.Remove the tie rod and upper ball joint from the knuckle.
10.Slowly remove the floor jack for the lower control arm and remove the spring from the vehicle.
11.Install the rubber isolator pad on top of the new spacer then install the spacer on top of the spring making sure the last coil sits down inside the new spacer.
12.Place the spring back on top of the lower control arm.
13.Raise the floor jack while supporting the knuckle until you are able to partially reinsert the threaded portion of the upper ball joint into the hole on the top of the knuckle.
14.Insert a pry bar into the coil spring and pry down on the lower control arm until the upper ball joint can be bolted to the knuckle.
15.Using a wrench and a plier, tighten the nut for the upper ball joint. Use the plier to keep the ball joint from rotating
16.Bolt the tie rod to the knuckle.
17.Reinstall the ABS brackets and the brake line bracket.
18.Bolt back the sway bar end links.
19.Install the front wheel.
Rear Installation
1.Inspect your lift block kit:
In your lift block kit, you should have the U-bolts, nuts and, of course, the lift blocks. Ensure that all of the parts you've purchased are there, while also checking to see the proper lift block for your vehicle.
2.Chock your front wheels:
You don't want your vehicle moving while you install your lift blocks. Since you'll be removing your rear wheels from the truck, you need to chock the front wheels so the vehicle doesn't move when you lift the rear.
3.Lift vehicle and remove rear wheels:
After securing the front wheels, you can then raise your vehicle off the ground and remove the rear wheels to access the area where you're going to place your lift blocks. Use a jack stand to keep the truck steady while you install the lift blocks.
4.Unbolt and lower rear axle:
The next step of the process is removing the nuts and U-bolts of the rear axle. Next, you lower your rear axle until you have space between your axle and the leaf spring.
5.Install lift blocks:
After you've made enough space for your lift block to fit, center your lift block using the two holes on the axle's top plate.
6.Complete installation:
With your blocks now centered and in the proper position, you'll lift your axle again. You'll bolt your lift block, axle and spring back, tightening the bolts to the manufacturer's specs. Finally, reinstall your wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground.
