The United States has suspended its duty-free "de minimis" threshold of US$800 for all countries, including Canada. Starting August 29, 2025, all shipments entering the U.S. must have duties prepaid before crossing the border - regardless of their value.

This change, mandated under U.S. Executive Order 14324, applies to all business shipments from outside the USA, whether sent through the postal system, a courier, freight provider, or any commercial channel.

What's changed...

Goods valued at US$800 or less that are shipped to the United States will be subject to an ad valorem duty. This duty will be equal to the effective tariff rate applicable to the product's country of origin under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

What this means ....

Starting August 29, 2025, every package shipped from Canada to the U.S. must show proof that duties have been prepaid before the shipment can be accepted for delivery. As such our postage rates reflect the cost of these tarrifs as well as the brokerage fee paid to prepare the paperwork. Our suggestion to our neighbors to the South is to not purchase from us until things change to a more favorable ruling for exporting countries.

The EU has replaced its €150 duty exemption with a €3.00 fee per HS code per shipment. Most EU countries will continue to accept DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) shipments as they do today, but recipients will now be charged that €3.00 per HS code at delivery. So an order with three shirts and a pair of glasses, for example, would carry €6.00. Countries affected are: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain.
