DESCRIPTION

The first edition.

Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece depicting the star of India, monochrome vignettes and full page illustrations, several colour vignettes, and twenty-nine monochrome plates to the front. 

This volume was published by the Burroughs Wellcome company in celebration of the coronation Durbar of King George V, held in 1911 in Delhi. The work provides a history of India and the rule of the British Empire, including chapters on Buddhism, the British Raj and the land, and sections on the native states and princes of India. To the rear is a large section on the 'Wellcome Research Laboratories', founded by Henry Wellcome, the publisher of this work, with additional sections on scientific, medical and photographic developments. 

A very scarce piece of history on India during British rule.


CONDITION

In the publisher's original cloth. Externally smart with fading to the spine, minor wear and bumping to the extremities, and marks to the boards. Rear hinge cracked. Front hinge starting after the front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages with minor spotting to the front and rear.
