This is an original 1891 certificate of interest from the North Shore Syndicate, issued in Chicago, Illinois, and signed by James S. Harlan—nephew of Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan. This example is printed in black ink on thin, lightly toned paper with an elaborate engraved border and a central vignette of a decorative classical-style fountain flanked by evenly spaced trees, possibly representing landscaped parklands or formal garden estates.

The certificate entitled the bearer to a beneficial interest in the proceeds of land conveyed by William R. Rockwell, and was managed by trustees John G. Shortall, Jas. S. Harlan, and Henry B. Sherman. The detailed trust language is specific to land conveyed by deed dated October 31st, 1890, recorded in Cook County, Illinois. The reverse side of the document shows a signed transfer dated 1895, with James S. Harlan also appearing again in autograph form.

James S. Harlan (1861–1927) was a prominent American lawyer and public official. Born into a family deeply involved in American legal and political life, he was the son of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan. James S. Harlan earned his law degree from Columbian University (now George Washington University) and went on to serve as Attorney General of Puerto Rico from 1901 to 1903. He was later appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission, where he served for several years. His legal and regulatory work, particularly in the realms of transportation and commerce, positioned him as a significant figure in early 20th-century American administrative law.
