BLACK CRAPPY (POMOXYUS NIGRO MACULATUS) |
The prized game fish shown here is part of a series of vintage prints from the mid 1900s, and are not recent reproductions. The fish in this print, and in all the prints I have listed from this series, in nearly every case have been depicted as living creatures swimming in their natural environment as opposed to the more sterile image of the side view of a fish against a white background. In these conditions, the illumination is, of course, from above, and the light is diffused by passing through the water. The appearance of the fish may, therefore, not always present itself as familiar to anglers, who often see the fish with the side turned upward to the rays of light passing through air. Note that in the living fish there is not a bright highlight on the cornea of the eye, for this only appears when light rays passing through dry air fall upon the wet surface of the eye - in other words the eye of a fish out of water.
Antique game fish prints are highly collectible, and make great wall decor for an office or cabin when matted and framed, especially in a group. Nice gift for the fisherman or marine biologist.
