Reveal Captain McVay dropped in rank - Washington, D.C. - The navy closed its inquiry today into the sinking of the Cruiser Indianapolis by remitting the court martial sentence of Captain Charles B. McVay, III and reprimanding four officers for delay in rescue operations. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, at a special news conference made the action public. McVay, captain of the cruiser, was found guilty of negligence by a court martial last December. The sentence was that he be dropped 100 numbers in the rank of commander and on captain promotion rolls. Shown at the press meet, from left: Vice Admiral Forrest P.
