Description
For many years the Washington Redskins were the football team followed by most people in the US South and Southwest, as there was no team in those areas; the Redskins had their own regional television network broadcasting every game, and people who grew up in those areas in the 1950s and 1960s came to take the Redskins as their NFL team.
For many years the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, the ACL, and the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railway, the RF&P, ran a "Redskins Special" to each home game; the railroads actually controlled a large block of hundreds of tickets and would sell a package that included rail fare and game admission. The train originated in North Carolina and made stops en route through Virginia to Washington, where passengers were discharged at Union Station for buses which would take them to RFK Stadium; following the game, the fans would re-board the buses for Union Station and take the train home.
For auction is an train ticket on the "Redskins Special" for November 13, 1966. The Redskins played the Dallas Cowboys that day, with Dallas winning 31-30; Don Meredith threw for 406 yards in winning, and Sonny Juergenson had 347 yards passing in defeat. The ticket was for travel from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Washington and return. It measures 3x2 inches and is printed on thick cardstock.
This item is in excellent condition. It has no rips or tears, no spills or smears.
Either the ACL or RF&P collector or an avid Redskins fan would appreciate this souvenir, which would look great if framed. YOU WILL NOT FIND VERY MANY OF THESE AROUND TODAY.
