1987 Press Photo Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin's, Second Oldest City
This is an original press photo. Visitors of Villa Louis in Praire de Chien can still stand beneath the tree under which Hercules Dousman died. The one-sided maple at the left of the photograph has been saved in the memory of Dousman, a secret agent for the John Jacob Astor fur trade, who built the Villa in 1843. Visitors on Friday evenings in August will also see this magnificent home of anther era brought to life by a special musical program and will be entitled to a free half-hour excursion on the Mississippi River. Villa Louis is owned and operated by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The house was named Villa Louis by second generation Dousman. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 08-14-1987.
