This puzzle box measures 4.63 inches by 3.15 inches by 2 inches making it a 4 sun size. It is a Japanese trick box that was made in the Hakone region of Japan famous for this particular art form and the maker is the famous Izumiya craft studio.
The geometric design on all sides of the box is decorated using a technique called "Koyosegi." It is an elaborate wood mosaic made from a number of different woods such as Camphor, Persimmon, Walnut, Cypress, Cedar, Zelkova, etc. to produce colors such as red, brown, yellow and black. The rods from these woods are then glued together to form the geometrical pattern designed. The bundled rods are then sliced cross grain into plates of wood and incorporated into the making of these boxes.
This box is a work of art as well as a conversation piece in its own form but it also has the added feature of being a puzzle box. One sliding key when moved reveals a slot where coins can be inserted. Retrieving the coins requires a total of 9 steps all done in the proper sequence to open this box. The condition is like-new with each movement being smooth. A solution would be provided on request.
