IMAGES OF WAR: SS GRENADIERS ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT
Bob Carruthers’ SS Grenadiers on the Russian Front, part of the Images of War series, presents a substantial photographic record of Waffen-SS formations fighting on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. Drawing upon an extensive collection of wartime photographs, the volume follows their operations from the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa in 1941 through to Germany’s final defeat in 1945.
The photographs document the changing character of the campaign: the rapid advances and confidence of 1941, the increasingly determined Soviet resistance, the ferocious fighting that followed, and the long German retreat before the advancing Red Army. Images depict Waffen-SS troops in frontline positions, moving across the Russian landscape, operating weapons and vehicles, enduring severe winter conditions and confronting the realities of an increasingly destructive war.
Accompanied by informative captions and supporting commentary, the photographs provide valuable visual evidence of uniforms, equipment, weapons, vehicles and battlefield conditions. They also record the physical hardships imposed by extreme weather, difficult terrain and prolonged combat.
While concentrating upon the military experience of Waffen-SS grenadiers, the volume offers a useful visual resource for studying the Eastern Front, a theatre characterised by ideological warfare, immense destruction and widespread atrocities, including crimes committed by Waffen-SS formations.
