Steven Lundberg was a talented and beloved glass artist, known for his stunning, life like creations that captured the beauty of flowers, sea life, and nature. He began his journey with glass in 1972 while apprenticing with his late brother, James. Together, they founded the well-known Lundberg Studios in Northern California in 1973, where they brought their artistic visions to life.
By the late 1970s, Steven had become a true pioneer of what’s called the California Style of crystal encasement. This unique style is a delightful blend of two historic techniques: the art nouveau “ice pick” method and the lampworking techniques used in crafting French paperweights. Thanks to his innovative use of gas "torchwork," Steven mastered the art of applying intricate, three-dimensional designs directly onto his pieces before encasing them in clear, molten crystal.
After the heartbreaking loss of his brother James in a bicycle accident in 1992, Steven continued to pour his heart into Lundberg Studios until 1997. That year, he took a brave step and started his own studio, Steven Lundberg Glass Art. Following in his father’s footsteps, Justin Lundberg embraced the family tradition of glass art, developing his own series of stunning pieces as a master glassblower. Unfortunately, in 2002, Steven was diagnosed with ALS, and he passed away in 2008.
His incredible work continues to inspire and is proudly displayed in many prestigious collections, including The Smithsonian Institute, the White House, The Corning Museum of Glass, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of American Glass, and the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum. Steven’s legacy lives on through his beautiful art and the love he shared through his craft.
