How to tune the CB antenna using the SWR External Meter
1. Turn off the CB and disconnect the antenna coaxial cable from the back of the intercom.
2. Connect the end of the antenna coaxial cable to the SWR meter, which indicates “Antenna” or “ANT”. The connector input can be on the back, the label is on the front of the meter.
3. Connect the short coaxial jumper cable from the transmitter location on the SWR meter to the back of the CB from which you removed the coaxial cable in step 1.
4. Close the hood and doors of the vehicle and make sure there are no people or other large vehicles around the vehicle area.
5. Turn on the CB.
6. Set the CB to channel 40.
7. Set the SWR meter to the FWD (forward) position.
8. Press the talk button and turn the knob until the SWR meter indicates the “set” position, thus keying in the microphone to release the talk button and cancel the microphone key. Note that many meters have SWR and RF power scales, so be sure to read the SWR reading.
9. Turn the SWR meter to the “REF” (Reflective) position.
10. Press the microphone key and look at the SWR reading on the SWR meter for channel 40. Make a note of this reading.
11. Repeat steps 6 through 10, this time on channel 1.
12. See the SWR range notes below. The lower the reading, the better the performance of your CB radio. The goal is to set the antenna for the lowest possible SWR reading, evenly distributed over 40 channels - for example, the same 1.5 reading on channels 1 and 40. By matching the SWR readings on channels 1 and 40, your radio will perform well on any channel within the 40-channel bandwidth. If they do not match, it is recommended that the antenna be adjusted.
IMPORTANT:
If the meter reading is in the red zone, indicating a high SWR reading, do not operate the CB or you may damage your wireless device.
