Press Photo Candidate Senator Estes Kefauver pets raccoon on campaign trail
Washington, D.C. Senator Estes Kefauver (Democrat) of Tennessee who gained fame as chairman of the Senate Crime Investigation Committee has discovered that in seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, there are many things he's called on to do that don't seem to have anything to do with politics. To please the ever-present photographer, the senator first (photo at left) hopped around his backyard on a pogo stick. Then, during his campaign swing around Florida, he evidenced his love of watermelon (and the cameramen) by entering the watermelon-eating contest (2nd from left). As a campaign gimmick (2nd from right) he adopted the coonskin cap, and for weeks the American people saw the much-photographed senator wearing his trademark. Then, suddenly, his advisers decided to drop the coonskin cap in favor of the real thing and as shown, exclusively, photo at right, the senator falls in line. All the posing for the cameraman have nothing to do with the senator's undoubted ability, but as presidential candidates have learned, the public must be teased. Photo measures 7 x 9.25 inches. Photo Is dated -- none.
