With four pages of advertisements to the rear, and with "A Stepson of the Soil" to the final advertisement page. In the second issue, an additional eight pages of advertisements were inserted.
A major novel from E. M. Forster, 'Howards End' revolves around three families during the beginning of the twentieth century; a family of rich capitalists, the half-German Bloomsbury-like siblings, and an impoverished young couple.
As suggested by critics, the titular house "is a mystical symbol of the beauty and gentility of that fast-disappearing world. The question of who will own it – for which read England's social future – dominates the book."
This copy bears the former owner's inscription of British Liberal Party politician, suffragist, and novelist Eleanor Acland to the front free endpaper. She served as president of the Women's Liberal Federation was a passionate advocate of Votes for Women and was an active suffragist.
With the former owner's ex libris stamp of Virginia Martin to the title page.
This is one of Forster's best known works, alongside 'A Room With a View', and 'A Passage to India'.
CONDITION
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Significant fading to back strip. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with light fraying in these regions. Small horizontal closed tear to back strip head. Boards bright, with small mark to tail of front board, very light tide mark to head of rear board, and light handling marks to tail of rear board. Hinges strained, with front hinge somewhat tenderly held. Rear hinge firmly held but, just a touch tender to the head. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned due to paper type. Significant spotting to first ten pages and terminal advertisement leaves, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright, with instances of light spotting. Former owner's stamp to title page.
