This volume is one of what appears to be a four-volume set. We believe this set is a First Edition, First Printing of Great Men and Famous Women, dated 1894. In attempting to ascertain a value on Bookfinder we found these books were in the listings mixed with a cheaper and of less quality eight-volume set from the same publisher. Oddly enough we have (had) volumes 1-4 of this set in our inventory. They are also dated 1894, with no mention of the originals. There appears to be NO distinction between the two on Bookfinder. You will notice we designated the lesser quality four volumes as a Later Edition. Apparently at some point the quality four-volume set was broken into eight parts by the publisher. These inferior versions of the originals lack the gilt edged pages, the quality leather spines and corners, fine end papers, and are printed on stock of a lesser quality.
We are offering these four quality original volumes not as a set since some people might have one or more in their libraries. We can always sell all four together to an interested party. What is also of note are the slipcases (see image) on volumes 2, 3 & 4 which have kept the conditions of these volumes in Near Fine over the years.
The book is half leather bound, with gold inlay on the front and spine, and all the page edges gilted. There is some minor wear to the corners, with the book remaining in Very Good Plus condition or better.
