This is an original press photo. Romans Observe Marian Year Opening -- Crowd gathers at base of column in Spanish Square in Rome yesterday during the observance of the opening of Marian Year. Base of column, atop of which is a statue of the Virgin Mary, is banked high with flowers. Marian Year was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII on the centenary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The statue was erected in 1854, the year the church proclaimed the dogma. Photo measures 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Photo is dated 12-09-1953.
