The Book

This is a RARE finely bound full-leather RIVIÉRE & SON binding published by G. Bell in 1927

With 57 illustrations and text designs by Ernest H Shepard.

Four maps in rear by A. E. Taylor.

Finely bound in full blue calf with intricate gilt borders to both covers, which also both feature a portrait of Samuel Pepys.

All edges gilt decorated, with fully decorated turn-ins.

Hand-marbled endpapers to front and rear.

Spine with six panels and five decorated raised bands, two panels with brown leather labels, gilt-stamped with title, decoration and the illustrator.

Panels alternately decorated with a lyre and trumpet design, and an anchor design.

With hand-sewn head and tail-bands in alternating colours of blue, green and white.

All edges gilt.

Stamped by the binders ‘Bound by Riviere and Son’ to verso of FFEP, as usual.

A sensational amount of work has gone into this binding, which has stood the test of time really well.

Presented in a custom slipcase which may be contemporary with the binding.

Pages crystal clear and without damage.

The only notable wear to the book is the spine, which has faded and dried a little. Head has been rubbed away and there is some superficial cracking to the leather.

Second label slightly peeling in upper right corner.

Some rubbing to gilt decoration, mostly intact.
