ANTIQUE
HAND EMBROIDERED FLORAL QUILT, 1880s
An antique embroidered floral quilt dating from 1880s or earlier and skillfully all hand stitched embroidery and heavily quilting. A wonderful example of Americana folk art with 25 different flowers.
This
quilt is reminiscent of a very grand and regal period when quilters had time to
skillfully finish a quilt.
CONDITION
In
good condition for its age, with tiny clusters
of spots scattered about. No repairs, some age splitting and popping of white
fabric all on top edge, some water stains, and a 2 flowers have fading to the red
thread stitches. There are hand done stitching, throughout at 8 stitches to the
inch. Backing material is a plain white cotton and with thin batting fillers.
Binding is rolled from the back to the front and hand stitched. This is a 1880's
quilt and cotton at that time was picked by slaves. You also could say that
this cotton is organic, pre chemical days. The quilt would work on a full to
queen sized bed and is in good, as found, unwashed condition, strong and sturdy.
