Specs & context

  • Diameter: 4” / 100 mm

  • Era: MC6801 announced 1977 and widely available by 1978.

The Motorola 6801 was primarily designed as a single-chip microcontroller/CPU for embedded systems and was widely used in
automotive engine controllers and other industrial applications.

Specific devices and applications that used the MC6801 (or its derivatives like the 6803 and licensed versions) include:
  • Automotive Engine Control Units (ECUs): General Motors licensed and extensively used custom versions of the 6801 and 6803 in millions of ECUs from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s.
  • Trip Master Digital Trip Meter: The 1978 Cadillac Seville used the MC6801 for its digital trip meter.
  • Computers: The Tandy TRS-80 MC-10 computer and its French clone, the Matra Alice, used the 6803, a simplified version of the 6801 that lacked the on-chip ROM.
  • Embedded Systems: The chip was popular in various embedded systems, including barcode readers, hotel card key writers, and amateur robotics.
  • Development Tools: Motorola produced the MC6801 Evaluation Module for system development, which used the EPROM version of the chip, the MC68701.
  • Successor Devices: The highly successful 8-bit Motorola 68HC11 microcontroller family, which is still used in various embedded systems today, descended directly from the 6801.
