Handsome view of the Hagia Sophia interior columns from mezzanine and huge discs which were added in 1849.  The building is considered the best example of Byzantine architecture and has gone through many permutations since its beginnings in 360 A.D., including Catholic Cathedral, Mosque and Museum. 

 

Guillaume Berggren (1835-1920) was born in Sweden moving to Istanbul at age 20 where he continued to work until his death.  He created a remarkable photographic record of Constantinople, Istanbul, Turkey including many portraits of the Turkish peoples.
