These 7 original newspapers contain headlines and coverage of President Franklin D Roosevelt's attempt to "pack" the US Supreme Court with additional justices in an attempt to gain a Supreme Court majority favorable to his New Deal policies.
These 7 headline newspapers mark the first attempt by a US President to "pack" the US Supreme Court, thus taking it over for the President's own political purposes.
The Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937, frequently called the "court-packing plan", was a legislative initiative proposed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt to add more justices to the U.S. Supreme Court in order to obtain favorable rulings regarding New Deal legislation that the Court had ruled unconstitutional. The central provision of the bill would have granted the president power to appoint an additional justice to the U.S. Supreme Court, up to a maximum of six, for every member of the court over the age of 70 years.
On June 14, 1917 the committee issued a scathing report that called FDR's plan "a needless, futile and utterly dangerous abandonment of constitutional principle ... without precedent or justification". Public support for the plan was never very strong and dissipated quickly in the aftermath of these developments.
