*** It is no coincidence that this ROOT BEER EXTRACT bottle could easily be mistaken for a HIRES Root Beer extract bottle. The similarities are too much: HIRE'S ROOT BEER = HEINLE'S ROOT BEER. Then it is the CHAS. HIRES MFG. CO. = CHAS HEINLE'S CO. And then there is the location: PHILADA, PA = PHILADA, PA. When pulling a bottle of Hires Root Beer Extract off of the shelf of the General Mercantile store 150 years ago, you wouldn't know that you actually pulled a bottle of Heinle's Root Beer Extract instead, and this was Heinle's ploy. These little Root Beer extract bottles come in several different colors and embossings, but all in the same basic square shape and size. These contained a concentrated syrup that, when added to 5 gallons of water, made a large batch of root beer. These weren't just advertised as a beverage but it was claimed that they cured many sicknesses and diseases, and that the roots and herbs that the extract was made from, held great medicinal properties. These have become a category of collecting in themselves. Just when you think you've seen them all, a new one like this comes along like this CHAS. HEINLE'S brand. It is a little known brand, one of the many small companies that came in and went out in a hurry. This brand may of had a very short run because of copy right infringements with Hires but Heinle may of made a lot of money until it caught up with him. This is the only HEINLE'S brand root beer extract bottle that we've EVER seen. A rare little off-brand, check it out!
