For sale is An ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE wooden MORTAR & PESTLE likely 1800s or earlier. Very primitive body shape with thick wall. The mortar is beautifully turned with many rings around its whole body. The pestle is also Beautifully turned to an elegant thin neck, very delicate looking.
This wood is lignum vitae. An extremely hard, dense, rot resistant wood that tends to darken with age. Lignum vitae is from South America and was sent for use in Europe starting in the 1500s.
Such a heavy built piece was possibly used in a 19th century apothecary.
A rare find in solid condition. There are some minor fissures and hire line cracks here and there, but they've been solid for a long time. Please check the photos for detailed condition.
The mortar measures 8” in height and 6” in diameter.
